Client policies

Clear expectations make better editorial partnerships.

This page provides a plain-language overview of the policies that apply to inquiries and freelance editorial services from Kev In The Margins.

Each booked project also includes a service agreement with its exact scope, schedule, deliverables, and payment terms. If that agreement differs from this overview, the signed agreement controls.

Effective August 18, 2026

The essentials at a glance.

Please review these policies before booking. Questions are always welcome before you sign an agreement or make a payment.

Booking

Dates are reserved after payment.

A signed agreement and the required deposit or full payment are needed before a project is placed on the editing calendar.

Delivery

Final balances come before final files.

For projects using a 50/50 schedule, the remaining balance is due when the edit is complete and before final materials are delivered.

Privacy

Your unpublished work stays private.

Client materials are not shared publicly or used in a portfolio without your written permission.

01

Booking and payment

  • Submitting an inquiry does not create a client relationship, obligate either person to proceed, or reserve space on the editing calendar.
  • A project is booked only after the service agreement is signed and the invoice’s required deposit or full payment is received.
  • Opening Chapters Critiques and Editorial Consultations are paid in full when booked. Manuscript Evaluations and Full Developmental Edits use the payment schedule shown on the Editing Services page unless the written agreement states otherwise.
  • Any remaining balance must be paid before final editorial materials are delivered. Delivery may be held until payment is received.
  • Prices are quoted in U.S. dollars. Any payment-processing or currency-conversion fees shown by the payment provider are the client’s responsibility.
  • Clients must be 18 or older to book services. If the author is under 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign the service agreement and submit payment on their behalf.

02

Cancellations and rescheduling

  • A client may request one reschedule with at least 14 calendar days’ notice before the scheduled project start. New dates depend on availability, and the payment already made will transfer to the rescheduled project.
  • If a client cancels more than 14 calendar days before the scheduled start, payments may be refunded minus the value of any work already completed.
  • If a client cancels 14 calendar days or fewer before the scheduled start, the deposit is nonrefundable because that calendar time was reserved for the project.
  • Once reading, preparation, or editorial work has begun, payments for work already performed are nonrefundable.
  • Editorial Consultations may be rescheduled once with at least 48 hours’ notice. Late cancellations and missed calls are nonrefundable.
  • If I must cancel a project and cannot offer a mutually acceptable reschedule, payments for undelivered work will be refunded.

03

Project scope and delivery

  • Each manuscript service covers one version of one manuscript unless the agreement says otherwise. Revisions, rereads, additional pages, and services outside the agreed scope require a separate quote.
  • Turnaround begins after all required materials and payment have been received. Business days are Monday through Friday and exclude U.S. federal holidays.
  • If materials arrive late, incomplete, or substantially different from the project described, the schedule and quote may need to change.
  • Editorial feedback is professional opinion, and the author remains responsible for every revision decision. Editing cannot guarantee publication, representation, sales, reviews, or any other outcome.
  • Unless specifically included in writing, developmental services do not include copyediting, proofreading, legal review, fact-checking, sensitivity reading, query-package editing, or verification of permissions.
  • Your manuscript is read and evaluated by me personally. I do not use generative AI tools to read, assess, or rewrite client work; all editorial feedback reflects my own professional judgment.

04

Confidentiality and rights

  • The author retains ownership of the manuscript and is responsible for confirming that they have the right to submit the material for editing.
  • Unpublished manuscripts, excerpts, project details, and editorial correspondence are treated as private client materials.
  • Client work, testimonials, titles, or identifying project details will appear publicly only with the client’s written permission.
  • Information may be handled by service providers reasonably needed to operate the business, such as email, forms, invoicing, payment, file-transfer, storage, or video-call providers.
  • A separate nondisclosure agreement can be discussed before booking when a project requires one.

05
